Mold Remediation
Molds are forms of fungi that are found everywhere, both indoors and outdoors all year round.
Outdoors, molds live in the soil, on plants and on dead or decaying matter. Mold is not naturally found indoors.
Mold growth is encouraged by warm, humid conditions, although it can grow during cold weather also. There are many thousands of species of mold and they can be in any color, including white, orange, green, brown or black. These visible molds can help identify the source and cause.
Many times mold can be detected by a musty odor indicating a hidden mold source.
Most molds produce microscopic cells called “ spores” that spread easily through the air when mold is disturbed. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growth when they find the right conditions. All of us are exposed to fungal spores daily in the air we breath, both outdoors and indoors.
For some individuals mold can cause health problems, this can only be determined under the care of a physician.

Mold spores can be found everywhere, but it takes the right conditions for mold spores to grow.
The mold spores already in your home can become a problem only where there is consistent moisture, high humidity or dampness. All molds need moisture to grow.
Common sources of indoor moisture that can cause mold problems include flooding, roof and plumbing leaks, areas around well pumps, damp basements or crawl spaces, or where moist air condenses on cold surfaces. Bathroom showers and steam from cooking may also create problems if not well ventilated.

Controlling excess moisture is the key to preventing and stopping indoor mold growth. Keeping susceptible areas in the home clean & dry is very important. Use exhaust fans, (ducted to the outdoors, not to your attic) to remove moisture where it accumulates: bathrooms, kitchens and laundry areas, sump and well pump rooms.
Be sure dryer exhaust goes outside, not into the basement. Repair all water leaks (even the little ones) quickly, it is very important to properly dry out or remove wet materials. Mold can start growing on wet cellulistic materials as soon as 48 hours after it gets wet. An air conditioner can lower humidity during humid weather in most of your home. A good dehumidifier that is attached to a humidistat in your basement will prevent your finished basement from smelling musty, which is an indication of mold. Try to keep humidity below 50% in all areas of your basement. Do not restrict air circulation in basements by shutting doors.
If you have had a sudden water intrusion that involves the structure, ( carpet, sheet goods, wood flooring, cabinets, drywall, sill plates, HVAC systems, etc.) you should contact a professional company such as Nelson Clean Care who specializes in finding hidden and trapped moisture.

Modern medicine has identified connections between mold and many health problems.
Mold problems have been around a long time, even in ancient, Biblical times, the priests were instructed how to rid homes of mold, Leviticus 14:33-48.
Small amounts of mold growth in workplaces or homes (such as mold on a shower curtain) are not usually a problem unless occupants are sensitive to mold. But mold should not be allowed to grow and multiply indoors. When molds are present in large quantities, they may cause odors and health problems for some people. Mold can also damage building materials such as drywall, wallpaper, wood, carpeting.

We are all exposed to molds every day, although it may not affect you.
Those more likely to be affected are infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant women, those who have respiratory conditions or allergies and asthma, those with weakened immune systems ( for example: those with HIV infections, chemotherapy patients, those who have had bone marrow or organ transplants, those who have compromised immune system diseases.)
Only a doctor can tell you if you need to be concerned about mold exposure.

The most important first step in solving a mold problem is to identify and correct the moisture source which has caused the mold to grow.
Once that is completed, small amounts of mold can be removed according to guidelines set up by the EPA. If someone is ill due to mold exposure, they should leave the structure until the mold remediation is completed.
Larger amounts should be handled by a professional mold remediation company such as Nelson Clean Care.
